Sometimes we forget that our upholstery, like our carpet, needs to be cleaned on a regular basis. In fact, most of us don’t remember this fact until our sofas look so gross and worn that we consider the cost of just getting a new one altogether. Let’s face it, when fabrics get dirty, then the uphill battle of getting them clean again can just seem like too much effort.
So before your furniture gets the better of you, take a moment to discover the best way to maintain your upholstery between professional cleanings. By following these 5 steps you can not only prolong the life of your furniture but may even be able to prolong the time in between professional cleanings.
1. Vacuum regularly.
When it comes to sofas, regularly can be once a month, or even once every other month if your household is not comprised of kids and pets. Vacuuming keeps the dust particles from imbedding into the fabric of your upholstery as people sit down and get comfortable. Removing these particles early will help to catch them before they have a chance to make themselves comfortable as well.
2. Remove spills promptly.
Just like any other spills, spills on the fabric of your upholstery will have a better chance of not becoming stains if you clean them up quickly. Always test any spot removers in an inconspicuous area of your furniture ahead of time to be sure you don’t create a bigger stain by applying the wrong product for your fabric. Blot(don’t rub) the spill with a clean, white towel. Apply the stain remover and then gently blot again. Vacuum the area to remove any particles left in the fabric.
3. Use covers.
Arm rests tend to soil more quickly than other areas of your furniture. Using arm covers can help to keep the soil off the original fabric. A decorative blanket on the back of a chair or couch can also help keep hair oils from causing greasy stains. If you own a pet, a special blanket or bed place where he likes to sit can help to keep that area from looking dirty too quickly.
4. Mix up those cushions.
Another good idea is to rearrange the cushions of your furniture from time to time. This will keep one cushion from showing wear before the others and maintain the uniformity of your piece. Also of note is that the fabric of your upholstery may fade in the sunlight. Try to place furniture away from direct sunlight or close blinds and drapes if possible.
5. Call in the professionals.
Yep! Eventually everybody’s upholstery needs a deep, healthy clean that can only be done by professionals. The high-tech, ultra powerful machinery invested in by service providers can reach the dirt that we are unable to get to with our own everyday tools. An extensive cleaning will prolong the life of your upholstery more than all the above steps put together.
