Uncork Your Imagination
August 23, 2013
I am continually amazed at the various flooring options that come to light. Manufacturers have moved beyond carpet, tile, aggregate, and hardwood to bring us such treasures as cement, bamboo, and glass flooring. The flooring option that has grabbed my attention most recently is cork.
When we moved to Fresno two years ago, we purchased a beautiful home with high ceilings. After we replaced the white carpet with ceramic tile, we discovered we had just created the perfect echo chamber. Sounds bounce around in our living and kitchen areas making it hard to understand what someone is saying. Although adding area rugs and throw pillows helped a lot, it is often still difficult for me to pick out sounds as they clatter around the room. We have even considered printing pictures on acoustical foam in an attemp to calm it down a bit.
But now there’s even another option. Cork floors. They are supposed to be very comfortable on the feet AND very sound absorbant. In fact, I heard about them partly because they were installed in a radio studio down in Los Angeles. What a great idea! They can be installed as a floating floor, with pieces that interlock, or as glued down tiles. Of course, they need to be sealed with a polyurethane coat to prevent moisture from seeping in. They tend to be priced about the same as hardwood floors, and like hardwood, they also have a tendency to fade in direct sunlight.
The maintenance is said to be easy and cork hides dirt well. I always like that part! Here is a link to blog that can answer every single question you might ever have about a cork floor. It is done by a family who has installed cork in much of their house and intends to continue that trend.
So un-bottle your inner interior decor genie and let the designing begin!
