Recycled Glass Flooring! Unbelievably Gorgeous!
March 8, 2013
It started with aggregate flooring. You know, those floors made out of small rocks, also known as Pebble-Tec or aggregate epoxy flooring. They’ve been slowly creeping into our homes and public buildings over the last decade. Some people love them and some people hate them. Then there are those like me who just can’t make up their minds. It seems like a fun idea, but what if rocks don’t quite fit into my interior design ideas?
I guess it was only a matter of time before aggregate epoxy flooring morphed into something else. Now these floors are being made with all sorts of materials from pieces of foam to pieces of chipped tile or concrete. One simply chooses their material and mixes it with resin, or epoxy, to create flooring material.
The new floor that really has me interested is epoxy mixed with recycled glass. This is known as Recycled Glass Terrazzo, or Glass Aggregate. Once I got past the “ouch” factor, it was amazingly cool to see what could be done with this material. You can choose the colors of glass as well as the color tint of the epoxy. It opens up a whole new world of designing option. Imagine ten more years down the road, maybe we can recycle our kids’ Lego’s or old Barbie doll accessories.
The truly marvelous thing about these new floors is that they are made 85% out of recycled materials. Here are some eye-opening facts about glass use. Americans use almost 13 million glass containers a year. Although 100% of glass can be recycled over and over without losing its purity or strength, only about 25% actually is. Add to that, that glass takes 1 million years to break down and you can imagine the room it is taking up in our landfills. One last fact is that repurposing glass through recycling uses about 40% less energy than it takes to create new glass.
It is a perfect choice for filler material in flooring. Beautiful, colorful, strong and environmentally helpful. This type of flooring is extremely durable and is made to last over 40 years. It also generally won’t chip, burn, stain, or fester bacterial growth. It requires low maintenance and certainly low or no replacement cost. And the icing on the cake is that your recycled glass floor can actually be recycled again when you’re done with it.
Recycled Glass Terrazzo is made into tiles, or planks that are then fitted to your home and sealed with more epoxy. One thing that makes this floor a better choice than typical stone aggregate is that glass is not porous. So if your epoxy needs to be resealed, you’re not likely to have issues with seepage and mold while you are in the process of getting it done.
It is said that glass aggregate is very easy to upkeep. No matter what style of flooring you have in your home, it is always a good idea to have it cleaned at least once a year. I image this fun glass flooring is no different. After all, dirt is dirt. The great thing about epoxy is that it can stand up to the heat of a professional aggregate cleaner.
At Aaron’s Quality Cleaners we use a pre spray on the floor to help break down soil, grime and general buildup. Then we bring in our large, powerful Rotary Extractor. This machine intensely pressure washes the epoxy floor with water heated to 240 degrees. Once clean, the extractor portion of the equipment sucks all that dirty water back out into a tank in the van. You are left with lovely, clean flooring once again!
So go wild with this surprising new flooring option. Make a bold choice. Create a floor like no other. Then give us a call when you’re ready to give that incredible floor an incredible clean. Remember, the best carpet cleaner in Fresno also happens to be the best Epoxy Aggregate cleaner in Fresno too!
