Our Unsung Hero – No Longer
Julie Rosenfeld serves as an Administrative Assistant for Aaron’s Quality Cleaners, a carpet-cleaning company that services the Fresno and Clovis (CA) areas. She is the author of “Julie’s Corner” and provides information and perspective on topics related to the carpet-cleaning industry.
Yesterday I got to go on a field trip for work. Working in the office for a carpet cleaner is a pretty cushy job. I sit most of the day in a comfortable chair, the air climate-controlled, and my boss friendly. Yesterday I ventured out into the world of carpet cleaning with our carpet-cleaning technician, Bryce.
Bryce is 22 years old and has been cleaning floors with Aaron’s Quality Cleaners for a little over a year now. His day starts at 6:00AM even though his work day doesn’t start until 8:00AM. Bryce has given up his car and rides his bike 6 ½ miles to work everyday. And that’s just ONE way! When he arrives, he reviews the day’s jobs with Aaron and then prepares the van for any possible mayhem the floors might throw at him that day. Bryce usually arrives at his first cleaning job by 8:30AM.
A carpet cleaning technician meets many different people throughout his day and never knows exactly what he will find when he arrives at a home. However, he knows it’s important that he make a good impression. People want to know, “Is he safe?” Aaron only hires trustworthy, intelligent, and friendly people (safety and reputation are very high priorities of his). Take it from me, Bryce is a top-notch guy. Not only is he a great people person, but he is honest and dependable. He cares about the job he does and is constantly devising ways to make each clean better and more efficient as he goes.
Bryce also has to be very knowledgeable about the varied aspects of carpet cleaning. There are a myriad of questions that we, as dirty carpet owners, don’t realize we have until the tech is in our home. How fast will it dry? Will this stain come out? What about odors? Protectant? Extra rooms? And that’s just carpet. Bryce has a head full of knowledge about tile, aggregate and upholstery as well.
Carpet cleaning is hard work. The rotary extractor that he brings into your home weighs 77 pounds. He has to move that baby back and forth throughout each room in a certain way, and sometimes perform tricky maneuvers like, circling or tripling. He has to move hoses without burning his hands or damaging baseboards. He has to lug the heavy rotary extractor, plus hoses, up and down the stairs, all while making sure the hoses don’t slide back down. He needs to be aware of which products work best on which stains. And the stair cleaning process would give you nightmares.
Bryce usually has four cleaning jobs a day. More in our busy time, which is summer. In Fresno. Over 100 degrees! His work day ends about 5:00 or 6:00PM after he has gassed up the van, cleaned the equipment and performed any special maintenance issues that need to be taken care of. Then he can bike the 6 ½ miles home to spend time with his family or girlfriend. Oh, and Bryce works on Saturdays too!
You won’t find Bryce complaining about the heat, the hours or the manual labor. He nods and smiles and continues to devise new ways to make the company that much more successful. If ever there were an unsung hero, Bryce it is. A hard worker, dependable, friendly and with a great attitude to boot.
As I return to my pleasantly cool office to be incased in my throne of comfort, I think of Bryce and admire his outlook on life and the mark of respect he brings to his chosen trade.
