Natural Carpet Stain Removal Recipes
February 22, 2013
There are hundreds of carpet stain removal products on the market. They vary in ingredients, price, and application.
I’ve also found that there are numerous homemade “recipes” floating around out there. It made me wonder. Do the homemade carpet stain removers really work? Is it truly cheaper than buying a ready-made product? Is it more eco-friendly? Better for allergy sufferers?
There is truly no solid answer to these questions, just millions of opinions on both sides, supported of course by emotive testimonials. What I do know is that different stains call for different treatments. I am not here to tell you these remedies work. I’m simply providing you with natural options that are popular across the country. If you’ve tried them, then let us know. I must admit my curiosity is piqued.
Always remember to try any product, natural or otherwise, in an inconspicuous place on your carpet before committing to a highly visible area. No use making things worse simply because you’re in a hurry.
So here are the popular natural stain removers for carpet:
Mix 1 teaspoon clear, dish washing detergent into 1 cup of lukewarm water.
Use on: mud, alcohol, soda, berries, jelly, washable ink, gravy, food dyes, ice cream
Mix 1 cup white vinegar into 2 cups lukewarm water.
Use on: coffee, tea, chocolate, wine, blood, vomit, mustard
Mix 1 tablespoon clear, household Ammonia into 1/2 cup lukewarm water.
Use on: coffee, tea, chocolate, wine, blood, vomit, mustard if the vinegar recipe doesn’t pull the stain
Mix 16 ounces Hydrogen Peroxide, 1 teaspoon clear, dish washing detergent, and 1 tablespoon baking soda.
Use on: pet stains
There is a basic application for all stains:
1. Remove as much of the stain as possible by blotting with a clean, white towel
2. Apply the recipes in the order shown. If one doesn’t work, then move to the next
3. Let it sit for at least five minutes, longer for pet stains
4. Rinse with water and blot with another clean, white towel
Please be sure to comment and let me know if any of these natural stain removers work for you. It sure is a good idea!
