Carpets and Asthma
July 10, 2013
I recently came across a blog talking about the role of carpet as it relates to people with asthma issues. It seems that for years the general belief was that those with asthma should not sleep in rooms that are carpeted. The idea is that carpets hold dust and other allergens that can trigger asthma attacks when those soils are disturbed and released into the air.
Recently another article has been published based on a large research study performed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, and the National Center for Research Resources of the National Institutes of Health.
937 American children were followed for one year as changes were made to improve their health within their home environments. Due to the above belief about carpets and asthma, one of the changes on the list was to remove the carpet from each child’s bedroom. Due to lease agreements and such, many of the carpets could not be removed and, therefore, many of the children studied kept their bedroom carpet intact.
The major surprise of the study was the result showing that removing or keeping the carpet in an asthmatic child’s bedroom did not make a difference to the health of the child. Other factors most certainly did make a difference, but carpet was off the hook.
Efficiently vacuuming the carpet with a HEPA filter vacuum was one of the reasons carpets were put back on the “nice list.” After all, carpets really do collect dust and dirt that need to be removed. Carpet fibers actually do a great job of holding onto allergens rather than just letting them float in the air where they can cause grief to those who are sensitive.
And of course when you want a really deep, healthy clean, then call the best carpet cleaner in Fresno, Aaron’s Quality Cleaners. We heat our water to 240 degree and scrub carpets 650 times per minute. Our extraction method reaches to the base of the carpet and we do not leave any detergent behind to aggravate those with asthma. In fact, our equipment is so good, that we can clean your carpets without using any cleaning products at all. Though I should mention that our carpet cleaning product IS environmentally friendly.
So this sounds like good news for those with respiratory issues. It’s also good for us. It means we can help improve the health and well being of asthma-prone people in the Fresno and Clovis area. Asthma is fairly common in our valley and it’s good to know our cleaning services can help.
