5 Tips to Extend the Life of Your Area Rug
July 16, 2013
Area rugs add a feel to our homes that nothing else quite manages to match. We can paint the walls and hang pictures and arrange furniture, but it is the area rug that pulls it all together. The area rug that brings both comfort and class. The area rug that sets the tone of a room.
I you are interested in purchasing an area rug, then here are some great sites for browsing:
If you have already purchased that perfect area rug, then here are some tips on how to care for it and extend its life.
This activity, above all others, will maintain your rug the best. It can’t be emphasized enough. Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum! Especially in high traffic areas where dirt tends to collect and then be walked on, grinding it into the fibers and wearing them down more quickly. Getting that dirt out promptly makes a big difference in the life of your area rug. However, do not vacuum the fringe on your area rug, but use a comb to rake it through.
Padding is not just used for comfort under your feet. An area rug placed on hard surface flooring can wear out much faster than one place on carpet. As the backing gets pressed against the hard floor, then it wears town and eventually begins to crumble. A pad placed under that rug can make all the difference in the world. Pads can also help to keep rugs from slipping, or from bleeding color through to carpet if placed on carpet.
3. Brushing out pet hair
Oftentimes pet hair is left behind after an area rug has been vacuumed. Simply use a stiff brush to remove the hair. Just be sure to brush in the same direction as the nap in your area rug.
Foot traffic and sun exposure are two factors that wear down an area rug. Rotating your rug to spread out these erosion factors will prolong its life and help it to wear and fade evenly, rather than in obvious sections.
5. Removing Stains
Time is crucial when dealing with rug stains. The quicker you can get to that stain, the better chance you have of removing it permanently. The best process is to blot (not rub) the stain with a clean, white towel. Moisten the area with water and then blot it again. Repeat this process until the stain disappears. Store-purchased cleaners should be used with caution as area rugs vary in the materials they are made with and run the risk of having colors that bleed.
Following these 5 guidelines will help keep your area rug looking new longer. Of course a professional steam clean every so often is also recommended for area rugs.
