5 Reasons NOT to Use a Rental Carpet Cleaner
May 17, 2013
I hear a lot about rental carpet cleaning machines. You know, the kind you walk by in the grocery store or check out from your local hardware store. I must admit, they seem like a good idea. Keeping up with carpet maintenance in between professional cleans is a fabulous idea. Even more so if you have accident prone children or pets in the house.
Now I admit that I am completely biased on this topic, but rental cleaners are just not good enough when it comes to deep cleaning your carpet. If all goes well, the most they offer is peace of mind, unless of course you’re reading this post, then even that will be taken away from you. After all, it is nice to think your carpets are clean. But for a truly deep, healthy clean you really do need a professional steam cleaner. There’s just no comparison.
Here are the problems that often arise with rented carpet cleaning machines:
1. Too much soap
Granted, this is partially due to user error, but one of the most common downfalls of using a rented machine is that there is just too much soap put into the carpet. If you see suds during the cleaning process, then you have most likely used too much soap. If your carpet is sticky after it has dried, then there is still soap in it and you will need to work it over again, and again, to extract it all. The main problem with leaving soap in your carpets is that it will actually attract dirt, causing your carpets to soil more quickly and requiring them to be cleaned again.
2. Too much water
Another common issue with rental machines is that too much water is put into the carpet without the power needed to extract it back out again. User often find themselves going over the same area of carpeting numerous times with just the vacuuming engaged in an attempt to remove all the water. These machines just don’t have the muscle to do this job well. The main problem with leaving too much water in your carpets is that it can lead to mold and mildew issues.
3. Too much staining
Stain removal can be tricky. If you were unable to get a stain out of your carpet using a standard stain removing product, then using a rental machine is not likely to make you any more successful. Add to that, different stains call for different stain removal products. Coffee is treated differently that pet urine which is treated differently than grease. You can buy specialty products for each stain type, but they are usually only available in large amounts from special carpet cleaning suppliers.
4. Too much time
Cleaning carpets under the best circumstances takes an enormous amount of time. Complicate the process with inadequate equipment and weak products and it’s just a recipe for a very long, unproductive day. Rental machines require many passes, much of it with a bent back or on your hands and knees. The machines only work in one direction, and even then must be used extremely slowly in order to show any effect.
5. Too much malfunction
Rental carpet cleaning machines are not known for their consistency. Often times they are not serviced or maintained between users. Renters pretty much take their chances that they will be getting a machine that is in optimal working order. If the power and effectiveness of the machine have been compromised, then you are down before you’ve even begun your carpet cleaning process. It can make it a very frustrating and wearisome day.
Needless to say, rental carpet cleaning machines are not high on my list. The damage they do to carpets because of too much soap or water often shortens the life of those carpets. A professional steam cleaning every one or two years will save you money in the long run. Only a professional carpet cleaner, using high-quality equipment and effective products can give a carpet the proper, deep cleaning it needs.
