20 Ways to Clean with Baking Soda

February 28, 2013

Baking Soda 2So long chemical cleaners, hello baking soda! I am aghast to discover the absolute multitude of uses for baking soda. I use it for baking and I have an open box of it in my refrigerator that’s been there for about a year now. That is my whole knowledge on the subject. Or I should say, that was my whole knowledge on the subject.

I’ve been researching different cleaning methods lately, especially natural ones you can make at home for less money. Guess which ingredient keeps coming up? Yep! Baking soda. So I’ve compiled a list of just some of the many ways in which you can use baking soda for cleaning and deodorizing purposes around your home.

Carpet Deodorization:

Sprinkle baking soda evenly over your carpet (using a container similar to a large salt shaker can make this easier).  Let is sit for at least fifteen minutes and then vacuum it up.

Pet Stain or Vomit Removal:

Make a paste of baking soda and water and gently rub it into the stain. Allow to dry and then vacuum.

Pet Stain Deodorization:

After cleaning a pet stain (5 Simple Steps to Remove Pet Stains), then sprinkle it with baking soda and let it sit until it dries. Then vacuum it up.

Remove Water Spots on Wood Floors:

Rub the spot with a damp washcloth dipped in baking soda. Wipe off.

Brighten Carpets:

Sprinkle baking soda over carpets once a month to keep them bright.

Carpet Freshener:

Sprinkle 10-20 drops of aromatic oil on 1 cup of baking soda and mix to remove clumps. Sprinkle on carpet and allow to sit for at least fifteen minutes. Vacuum.

Tile Cleaning:

Combine ½ cup baking soda and a bucket of warm water. Scrub onto tile. Rinse.

Other Interesting Uses for Baking Soda:

Deodorize drains

Clean Tupperware

Polish silver

Brighten laundry

Brush into your dog’s coat to remove odors

Deodorize tennis shoes

Deodorize trash cans

Sprinkle in ashtrays

Deodorize the refrigerator

Use as an antacid, mouthwash, toothpaste

Relieve diaper rash

Wash fruits and vegetables

Get food smells off your hands

Wipe down walls and furniture

Clean the microwave

Clean chrome or stainless steel surfaces

The list just goes on and on. Baking soda seems to be the new, hot cleaner in this new, green world. Give it a try and let me know what you think. Happy cleaning!
