10 Products to Remove Paint From Carpet
July 24, 2013
I think just about everybody has had paint drips fall in exactly the wrong place. And not just regular people either. “Professional” painters have issues too. So what do you do when you drip paint on your carpet? According to the internet you can use everything from WD-40 to Barbasol shaving cream!
I recommend starting with mild substances before moving on to the more caustic chemicals available. Be sure to test each one on the carpet in the back of your closet to be sure it isn’t going to discolor your carpet in a more permanent way than the paint itself.
Of course, if the paint is still wet, then your job is a zillion times easier. Blot up as much as you can with a towel. Add a mixture of hot water with a bit of mild dish detergent to it and blot again … and again … and again. Until its gone!
If the paint is older and dry, then it is a much more time consuming process:
1. Scrape off as much of the dried paint as you can using a knife or needle.
2. Re-wet the paint with your product of choice (test it first) from the list below.
3. Allow the product time to soak into the paint, then pick at the paint and scrub
it with a stiff brush to detach it from the carpet fibers.
4. Rinse and blot.
5. Repeat … repeat … repeat … until its gone.
Like a said, it is a very time consuming process, especially if you’re dealing with a messy painter. One other process I’ve seen is to lay a damp terry cloth towel over the stain after you have worked a cleaning product into it and then place a hot iron on top of the towel. I’ve seen the towel actually turn the color of the stain that is being lifted as it leaves the carpet. Too cool.
